Statement by Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga on the pending teacher strike

The Ministerial Committee appointed by President Jacob Zuma to oversee education in the Eastern Cape met today, Thursday, 10 November 2011 to receive a progress report from Basic Education Minister, Angie Motshekga.

The meeting noted with concern, reports of a pending teacher strike in the Eastern Cape. The Committee regards such an intention as unfortunate, during a time when learners are writing their final year examinations.

The South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (SADTU) has since assured Minister Motshekga that the NSC (Grade 12) examinations will not be disrupted.
