May the 25th marks the celebration of the heroic struggles waged by Africans against the forces of colonialism, imperialism and apartheid. It is also symbolic of the collective yearning of Africans for peace, security, fairness, justice, and equality. We are inspired by the achievements that the peoples of South Africa and Africa have made in building a human rights-based culture on the continent in pursuit of core values of freedom, equality, and democratic governance.
It has been over five decades since the demise of colonialism but Africa is still mocked by the reality of the gargantuan challenges confronting the continent, like poverty, conflicts and we are now tormented by forces of neo-colonialism and imperialism.
Despite these challenges Africa is moving forward, the conflicts that have ravaged the continent are decreasing and the role of the African Union is visible to address some of the problems encountered by the continent. Let us tomorrow as Africans, once again commit ourselves tomorrow to the original principles of our founding fathers and remind ourselves that our true salvation lies in the unity of the African peoples.
