State of the Province Address briefing at the Mafikeng Provincial Legislature regarding economic reform

Newly appointed Premier of the North West Province Honourable Maureen Modiselle was addressing various dignitaries at the North West Provincial Legislature about the socio-economic challenges facing the province. The address began at 09h00 with honourable members seated in the house listening attentively.

One of the key aspects of the address was overcoming the seemingly insurmountable distress caused by the effects of the current economic recession. The valiant Premier did not shy away from this challenge and conceded that the present economic turmoil is hurting people where it hurts the mostly, namely their pockets. However as she stated "Recession or no recession, our people still expect government to provide answers on job creation, poverty relief, investment and growth" thus implying that tireless efforts are being made to address the issue as quickly as humanly possible.

She had also reiterated that the legislature is mindful of the challenges affecting the youth especially during youth month marking the 33rd anniversary of the June 16th Soweto uprisings. Established initiatives such BBBEE will concentrate on further upping the ante in favour of economic empowerment for youth and women residing in the province.

In line with the 2009 fiscal year and State of the Nation Address formulated by the fourth democratically elected President Jacob Zuma this year, the Premier had assured Members of the Provincial Legislature and other special guests that public servants will not be exempt from vigorous budget constraints while conducting service delivery.

The Premier also identified priority objectives in response to the economic pandemic namely, poverty. Key strategies are in place to combat the issue such a massive intervention to stimulate social and economic infrastructure as well as a rural development tied to land agrarian and food security.

The address was concluded by quoting revered Nigerian writer Ngugi wa Thiong’o to inspire continued public trust in the government mandate.
