Showing once again that it's serious about school sport, Sport and Recreation South Africa (SRSA) has contributed R3,4 million towards the staging of this year's South African Schools Athletics Championships.
The event, which kicked off on 23 March was declared officially open by Cllr Charmaine Manuelo, the Executive Mayor of the Drakenstein Municipality at the Dal Josaphat stadium in Paarl.
The Championship is a joint venture between the Departments of Sport and Recreation SA, Basic Education and South African Schools Athletics (SASA).
During the 4 day event top athletes from schools through-out the country will compete for the top three positions in each item.
Ms Lenky Mulaudzi, project leader for this particular event was sent a message from Sport and Recreation minister, Fikile Mbalula wherein he welcomed the children to the world of school sport, and wished each athlete the very best. He said that the departments want to ensure that sport at grass roots level are taking place and that all children are given an equal opportunity to participate in any sporting code in this country.
Sport and Recreation SA contributed R3,4 million towards the event.
The championships will end on Saturday, 26 March 2011. A medal presentation will take place at the end of the field and track items.
