Sport and Recreation on President Jacob Zuma's decision on alleged match fixing probe

Minister of Sport and Recreation South Africa Fikile Mbalula's response to match fixing in soccer

Pursuant to our agreement with the South African Football Association (SAFA) and the Federation of International Football (FIFA) in 2013 to request the President of the Republic of South Africa to appoint a Commission of Inquiry to “investigate, among other things, the alleged match fixing and manipulation of soccer outcomes”.

The Ministry of Sport and Recreation South Africa (SRSA) wrote to the President of the Republic of South Africa in 2013 to request President Jacob G Zuma to “appoint a commission of enquiry into match fixing and manipulation of soccer outcomes”.

The President has after applying his mind and taking into careful consideration the FIFA initiated investigation on the matter at hand, decided not to accede to the request at this stage.

As a result, SRSA has already written to the South African Football Association (SAFA) to advise them of the decision on this matter. As advised by the Presidency the matter will henceforth be handled by FIFA going forward.

From the side of the Department of Sport and Recreation the matter is therefore closed.  For further information on this matter please refer to the official statement by Presidency.
