Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Vusi Shongwe warns speedsters that they will be arrested and might also lose their driver’s licenses if found guilty.
This comes after three motorists, who were driving between 161 and 177 km/h on the N3 highway between Villiers and Heidelberg were arrested on 29 December 2011.
Last weekend, four other motorists were arrested after they were found driving between 170km/h and 177 km/h. All seven motorists were charged and have paid bail amounts ranging between R1000 and R1500. They will all again appear in court early in 2012. Another driver was caught today [30 December 2012] driving at 167km/h on the same road.
MEC Shongwe says that any driver who will be found excessively exceeding the speed limit in the province should be arrested on the spot. He says that speeding is one of the factors that cause accidents on the roads.
“We will not hesitate to arrest drivers who want to endanger the lives of other road users. Speeding is one of the causes that has led to people losing their lives in road accidents, therefore drivers are warned.
“We will not arrest only on the freeways, our officers will also arrest in townships where there are many pedestrians who might fall victim to speeding motorists,” said Shongwe.
He also urges drivers to be patient, share the road and abide by the rules of the road at all times to prevent further accidents.
“Drivers should also change their attitude towards road safety for the benefit of all road users,” concludes Shongwe.
