Special voting arrangements for 2011 municipal elections

After the promulgation on 10 March 2011 of the date for the municipal elections, the Electoral Commission (IEC) approved an election timetable outlining the electoral processes and time frames until Election Day including for special votes. It is the first time that voters will be able to cast a special vote in municipal elections.

The application process for special votes for the 2011 municipal elections opened on Friday, 15 April and will run until Wednesday, 3 May 2011 at 17h00.

If you are a South African citizen, 18 years and older and your name appears on the voters’ roll, but you cannot vote on Election Day at the voting station in the voting district where you have been registered, you qualify for a special vote.

You have to apply for a special vote in person at your local Municipal Electoral Officer or someone else can also submit your application on your behalf.

Those applicants who cannot vote on 18 May will cast their special votes on Monday, 16 May between 08h00 and 17h00 at the voting station in the voting district where they are registered.

Those who are physically infirm or disabled will be visited by IEC staff on 16 or 17 May at home. Please remember that you have to vote in the voting district where you are registered.

The MEC1 form (Appendix 25) is available from Municipal Electoral Offices (MEOs) countrywide or on the IEC website at http://www.elections.org.za. For more information or contact details of MEO offices call the IEC toll free on 0800 11 8000.
