Speaker's recovery going well, expected back at work next week

The Speaker of the National Assembly, Baleka Mbete, is recovering well and is expected to resume her duties in Parliament when the second term starts on Tuesday, 19 August.

Mbete was advised by doctors to rest and rebuild her strength following an intense election campaign in May.

To date Mbete has led the formative stages of the Fifth Parliament chairing its key structures including the Rules and Programme committees as well as Parliament’s inaugural media briefing, State of the Nation address and Parliament’s budget vote.

With most of the work to establish the new Parliament and budget appropriation processes having been completed, the focus will start to shift more towards oversight and legislation. Questions to the President, Women’s month celebration and the National Council of Province’s (NCOP) provincial week are some of the highlights on the programme.
