The Speaker of the North West Provincial Legislature, Hon. Supra Mahumapelo, has noted with great concern the recent incidents that took place in Marikana where a National Union Mineworkers (NUM) shop steward was reportedly shot dead and another man critically wounded at the NUM office at Lonmin’s Western Platinum mine, at Wonderkop.
This happened shortly after the killing of three people in Nkaneng on the 11 May 2013 where a Association of Mine Workers & Construction Union (AMCU) North West Regional Organiser Mawethu Steven was shot dead at a tavern in Photsaneng.
The Speaker reiterates his call upon AMCU and NUM to accept the reality that they need to co-exist.
“We are going to constitute a committee that will be sent to Marikana to understand challenges that has emerged and report to the House.”
Our communities and economy deserve the best and this best can come from all of us pulling together – Saamtrek- rather than be torn apart by our differences.
