The Speaker of the North West Provincial Legislature, Hon Supra Mahumapelo is grateful of all who made the cleansing ceremony in Marikana possible on Monday, 17 June 2013. These include the families for mine workers, police and the security guards who were in attendance and participated fully.
The Speaker is happy that our communities and institutions are adding their effort to find closure to the tragedy over and above the noble effort by President Jacob Zuma. President Jacob Zuma has established the Farlam Commission of Inquiry, and even extended its duration twice to allow it enough space and time to establish facts about what actually unfolded on the tragic day of August 2012. Further, the President appointed Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe to mediate in the mining strife.
This is indeed a positive step that will definitely face challenges over which we have capacity and the will to triumph.
There is a need for all of us, including labour unions operating in the mining sector to tolerate and embrace each other in building a National Democratic Society in pursuance of the Saamtrek philosophy.
