Speaker calls on all to wear the green ribbon

The Speaker of the North West Provincial Legislature, Hon Supra Mahumapelo, announced during his maiden Budget Speech on the 24th May 2012 that “the focus of this year’s budget is on strengthening public participation and our oversight mandate.

To this end the Legislature will develop awareness campaigns and educational programmes aimed at learners, educators and civil society as a whole. It will also broaden the general knowledge about the role of the North West Legislature in the lives of the people of this province”.

In support of the Child Protection Week that extends from the 28th May 2012 to the 3rd June 2012, Hon. Mahumapelo calls upon all the citizenry of the North West Province to wear a green ribbon during this campaign.

He further applauds the Management, Staff, School Governing Body and the Learners of Moatlhodi Primary School, particularly the Grades 5 and 6 learners, for setting aside time yesterday to contribute to the debates that will unfold in the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) Seminar on Child matters from the 31st May to the 1st June 2012 in Cape Town. Their inputs and messages will be taken and tabled “voetstoots” in that Seminar.

The Speaker is confident that the allocation of the Child Care and Protection sub-programme will promote the Children’s Act, 2010. Since the inception of the Act, the allocation towards its realisation has increased from R53 million to R76 million this financial year.

Hon. Mahumapelo calls upon all of us to be vigilant and expose those who abuse children whether in Rustenburg, Lekwa Teemane, Tshidilamolomo or any other parts of the North West province. The well-being of children is the responsibility of all of us.
