South Africa's fisheries research vessel, the Africana, successfully retrieved drifting USA mooring

The Africana’s, one of South Africa’s fisheries research vessels, successfully retrieved a mooring that has broken loose and was drifting in the Agulhas Current. The Africana is currently out doing the pelagic survey on the south coast east coast of South Africa and was slightly ahead of schedule when the request was made from the USA based University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science.

The buoys are part of a global network of buoys, and are usually moored in one place. They automatically collect and download information on weather and oceanographic conditions in order to provide sound scientific basis for managing natural resources among others.

The Africana is expected to be back at the Cape Town harbor early December after completion of the pelagic survey.
