The Department of Home Affairs appeals to all South Africans who wish to register for the Local Government Elections but are without identity documents (IDs) to visit our offices which are open this whole weekend 5 to 6 February 2011 from 08h00 to 17h00.
This forms part of our commitment to ensure all South Africans have an opportunity to exercise their democratic right to vote on the date still to be determined by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) to elect local government representatives. Additionally, the department has a constitutional mandate to support the IEC to deliver credible, free and fair local government elections.
Our officials have since Friday, 4 February 2011 been working extended hours to ensure that those without IDs can apply.
Simultaneously we urge those who have yet to collect their IDs to visit their offices of application to do so.
We remind the public that an ID is a passport to a better life including, amongst others, the right to vote as well as access critical social services provided by government.
We will also be utilising our mobile offices to deliver services to people in areas that have hitherto not been in close proximity to Home Affairs offices.
