South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) calls on beneficiaries with notification letters not to wait until the last minute to undergo reviews and life certification for social grants

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is appealing to beneficiaries with notification letters not to wait until the last minute to undergo review and life certification process for their social grants. Furthermore, SASSA calls on all other beneficiaries who have not received any letter to wait for their letters to be posted, and only visit SASSA offices once they have received written notification through registered mail. Only beneficiaries who have received letters from SASSA and those whose grants have been suspended should be coming to SASSA offices.

According to Social Assistance regulations, social grants beneficiaries are expected to be reviewed periodically. Over the past months, an increasing number of beneficiaries have flocked to our offices to conduct review and life certification for their grants. However, SASSA will first issue a letter of notification to beneficiaries who are due for this process. Amongst others, reviews and life certification ascertain the:
• social grants beneficiary’s financial situation has not changed since application
• beneficiary is still alive
• medical conditions of those who are receiving grants on medical grounds
• residential particulars that have changed are updated

Furthermore, beneficiaries who are due for review will first receive a notice to conduct review and life certification at a particular SASSA office within three months. Should the beneficiary not undergo review and life certification within six months of receiving a letter from SASSA, the grant will lapse and the beneficiary will be notified thereof.

To date, over 800 000 letters were posted via registered mail notifying beneficiaries on review, intention to suspend and suspensions of their grants. A further 600 000 letters informing beneficiaries about the lapsing of their grant, including conversion of grants from Disability to Old Age, were issued.
