South African Police Service Warrant Officer arrested for corruption: Sebokeng

The Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD) in a joint operation with the Johannesburg Crime Intelligence Unit yesterday arrested a South African Police Service (SAPS) Vereeniging Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit based Warrant Officer for corruption.

The 46 year old officer who cannot be named until he makes a first court appearance was arrested following allegations by a rape suspect that he had coerced him to pay a bribe of R3 000-00 in order to make his docket disappear.

The complainant (rape suspect) alleges that separate payments of R200-00 and R1 000-00 respectively had been made but the police officer constantly pressurised him to settle the outstanding balance or face arrest.

Following the lodgement of the complaint, ICD arranged an entrapment operation on 28 August 2011 in Sebokeng. After receiving the bribe, the suspect officer sped off in a police vehicle in an effort to evade arrest. He was later traced and apprehended at his house in Sebokeng.

He will remain in police custody until he makes his first appearance in Sebokeng Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 1 August 2011.
