The South African Police Service (SAPS) suspends five Police Officials

The National Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS), General Riah Phiyega, has sent her heartfelt condolences to the Mafube family of Sebokeng in Gauteng, whose 22 year old son, Ditjhaba, was allegedly shot by members of the SAPS. Ditjhaba died at the scene.

The SAPS has since moved swiftly to suspend the five police officials, who have been alleged to have played a critical role in the death of Ditjhaba Mafube, without remuneration. The SAPS’s internal disciplinary process will run parallel with the Independent Police Investigative Directorate’s mandatory investigation. The SAPS has committed to providing all the necessary information and to cooperate fully in the investigation.

General Phiyega, together with the Provincial Commissioner of Gauteng, Mzwandile Petros, visited the family last week where they had the opportunity to express sadness, shock and disappointment with the turn of events on 3 July 2013. “I recognise that no amount of words, sincere as they may be, will undo what happened or take away their sorrow. I therefore pray that God comforts the family during this difficult period and, with time, heal their wounds,” General Phiyega said.
