South African Police Service (SAPS) operations in KwaMashu men’s Hostel stepped up

An additional national deployment of 110 members from the Tactical Response Team and Public Order Policing Unit has been deployed to the KwaMashu Men’s Hostel to beef up provincial deployments that were already in place.

Although the situation is still tense these extra deployments will ensure that there is stability on the ground. The Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni met with political leaders at her office yesterday where an agreement was reached on a way forward to resolve the current stand-off.

All stakeholders agreed that police will ensure that there is a high police visibility in the area combined with increased crime prevention operations. A high level police investigation was launched to investigate the incidents that occurred over this weekend and all stakeholders agreed to co-operate with the police investigation. We are satisfied that political parties will engage with their membership on the ground to prevent further acts of violence and intimidation. All stakeholders agreed to provide police with proactive information to prevent further attacks and violence.

Stakeholders also agreed there has to be engagement with local government departs to address issues of concern at the hostel like service delivery and environmental design. All stakeholders have committed to working together towards peace and stability and assisting the SAPS with regards to investigations.
