South African Police Service (SAPS) national Commissioner meets the President of International Criminal Police Organisation (INTERPOL)

South Africa is receiving continued support in its preparations for the 2010 FIFA World Cup particularly on issues relating to safety and security for the world biggest sporting event.

The President of International Criminal Police Organisation (INTERPOL) has once again thrown the full support of the world’s biggest police organisation INTERPOL towards ensuring that South African delivers the football spectacular event as safely and peacefully as possible.

During a meeting at the 78th annual General Assembly of INTERPOL, the South African Police Service (SAPS) national Commissioner Bheki Cele who is also the Chairperson of Southern African Regional Police Chiefs Cooperation Organisation (SARPCCO) Chiefs of Police in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region (comprising of 13 countries ) and President of INTERPOL Ban Hui Koo pledged extensive support towards strengthening partnership and cooperation in the overall commitment of fighting and combating international crime in all its 188 member countries.

Amongst other issues discussed in the sideline meeting was the strong interest shown by South African in the best practices shared by other countries like Malaysia and Vienna on the establishment of an academy to fight corruption and organised crime in their respective countries.

“Our directorate of priority crime investigations, The Hawks, will strategically establish effective partnerships with these countries, and we certainly hope that the beginning of this process will yield commendable results in fiercely combating organized crime,” said Cele.

The head of South African delegation Commissioner Cele met with many other influential countries during the INTERPOL annual General Assembly. All countries have unanimously agreed on the resolutions passed at the conference that a collective approach and strategy will benefit the whole world in the fight against crime.

Furthermore the broader partnership with the United Nations peace keeping mission will serve as a multiplier force in delivering to the mandate of international policing.
