A murder investigation conducted by the Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD) has resulted in the conviction and sentencing a Kliprivier South African Police Service Constable, Moeketsi Silvester Nyareli (27) to fifteen years imprisonment.
Constable MS Nyareli’s conviction and sentencing follows an investigation into a shooting incident that happened on 17 December 2009 in Berverly Hills, Evaton. Constable Nyareli shot and killed his wife (23) with his service pistol following an argument after she was dropped off at their house by another man.
After the shooting, he went outside and handed over his firearm to a neighbour before requesting him to call the police to alert them of what had happened. Police soon after arrived at the scene and Constable Nyareli was arrested.
ICD attended the scene of crime and took over the case for further investigations. A post-mortem conducted on 17 December 2000 revealed that the deceased died as a result of gunshot wounds to the head and lower abdomen.
ICD completed it’s investigations and following testimonies by witnesses, Constable MS Nyereli was convicted of murder on 11 June 2011 at the Sebokeng Magistrates Court. He was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment and declared unfit to possess a firearm. The officer was also dismissed from the police service following an internal disciplinary hearing.
