The South African Police Service Board of Commissioners reassures communities of police commitment to fighting crime

The South African Police Service (SAPS) Board of Commissioners, consisting of the generals at national level and the nine Provincial Commissioners had its final meeting of 2013 yesterday.

The Board of Commissioners (BOC) was established in terms of the South African Police Service Act and its primary function is to promote cooperation and coordination within the SAPS.

Yesterday's meeting, in the main, deliberated on the overall state of crime in the country over the past six months of the current financial year and noted with concern the number of murders reported. These murders are closely associated with the abuse of alcohol and other social ills. The BOC committed itself to ensuring that the crime prevention and combating initiatives for the festive season, which have already been implemented, pays special attention to this.

Furthermore, the Provincial Commissioners met separately, without the National Commissioner present, to consider the recent media reports involving the National Commissioner and the IPID investigation.

The Provincial Commissioners, who command all policing initiatives including at grass-roots level, indicated that they would like to reassure the country that they will continue to work hard and ensure that, on the ground, it is business as usual. In other words, the matter involving the National Commissioner will not impact on the day-to-day management of crime.

The Provincial Commissioners noted the support and leadership provided by the National Commissioner despite the current circumstances. As part of the leadership team, the Provincial Commissioners remain committed to fighting crime and ensuring that all decisions taken at various management levels are implemented. The Provincial Commissioners have full confidence in the National Commissioner.

In conclusion, the BOC committed itself to continue with efforts to ensure that all police officials are motivated and focused on their tasks, particularly during this busy time of the year.
