South African National Defence Force (SANDF) teams to start work in Zanzibar

Following the order by the Commander-in-Chief, President Jacob Zuma for the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) to deploy teams to assist the Tanzanian Defence Force and its government to rescue citizens involved in the ferry accident on Saturday the SANDF divers, medical teams have arrived in Zanzibar and will start working in the morning.

Accompanying a team of eleven specialists divers, four medical personnel is a range of highly specialised equipments like chambers and oxygen gases to be used during the operation.

Speaking during the loading of the equipments and personnel on the South African Air Force (SAAF) C130 Re-Admiral Bernard Teuteberg said the SANDF consists of soldiers form the Navy, the Airforce and the South African Medical Health Services.

After receiving a briefing on the full logistical operations the Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Ms Lindiwe Sisulu, said the SANDF will do everything to support our neighbours and friends when they are in time of need. “The President, who is the Commander-in Chief, has ordered that the SANDF must do everything possible to help the Tanzanian Defence Force to recover all the bodies and to provide any other assistance required. We are ready to do so and the SANDF is very capable and has all necessary skills and equipments, we are always ready,” said Sisulu.

The Minister added that the South African Government and the Tanzanian Government work together very well in maritime operations and joint exercises and it would be easy for them to form a united team that will work together.

The SAS Mendi, a Frigate from the SANDF, is also on standby to assist with salvage and recovery operations.
