South African National Defence Force patrols caught in ambush whilst conducting patrol and escort duties in Sudan

The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) confirms that its members deployed in Sudan as part of United Nations – African Union Hybrid Operations in Darfur were attacked in ambush whilst performing patrol and escort duties.

During the attack, the SANDF suffered three (3) casualties:

1. Private Vincent Mthuthuzeli Van der Walt (deceased)
2. Corporal Kabelo Ronald Sebe (injured)
3. Private Thabiso Sydwell Makhetha (injured)

The Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Chief of the SANDF and Chief of Joint Operations extends their sincerest condolences to the family of the deceased and wish the injured members a speedy recovery.
