South African mother and two children rescued from Pakistan

During May 2010, a South African mother, Sajida Sungey (37) together with her two children accompanied her Pakistani national husband to Pakistan. Here, she and her daughter are alleged to have been “abused and not allowed” to return to South Africa.

Sajida had initially contacted the South African High Commissioner in Islamabad with complaints of being incarcerated and the abused. Our South African Police Service (SAPS) liaison officer, Colonel Imran Hyder, conducted an urgent investigation and discovered that Sajida had married the Pakistani national in South Africa.

In May 2010 she and her two children, her eleven year old daughter and her infant son accompanied her husband to Pakistan. She claimed that she was not allowed to return to South Africa and that she and her daughter had suffered constant abuse at the hands of her husband and his family.

The abuse was to such an extent that Sajida claimed to have not even known the address where she was living in Pakistan. She did however provide our liaison officer with enough information which helped to trace her to where she was living. Our officer together with Pakistan police rescued Sajida and her two children.

On completion of certain legal issues, and with the help from an organisation called the Gift of the Givers, Sajida and her children are in transit from Pakistan to Cape Town, South Africa.

The names of the two children will not be disclosed as one or both children is/are alleged to have been victims of crime.
