South African Library and Information Association (LIASA) National Librarian of the Year 2010

Ms Elmari Kruger, the Assistant Director of the Motheo District in the Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation was chosen as the runner up (second position) of the LIASA National Librarian of the Year Award 2010!

The South African Library and Information Association (LIASA) National Librarian of the Year for 2010 is Denise Nicholson, a Copyright Services Librarian at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg (WITS) and the third position was taken by Ingrid Thomson a Humanities Subject Librarian at the University of Cape Town.

Elmari Kruger is responsible for the libraries in the Motheo District, partakes in the formulating, monitoring, reviewing and implementation of policies at public libraries and depots.

All finalists received a certificate at a glamorous gala dinner at the St George Hotel and conference centre on 30 September 2010:

  • first prize: Trophy and R30 000.00 – sponsored by UKS
  • second  prize: Trophy and R20 000.00 – sponsored by EBSCO
  • third prize: R10 000 – sponsored by Sabinet.

EBSCO the sponsor of Ms Kruger’s prize is a leading service provider of e-­journal, e-­book and e­-resource management tools, full text databases and related services for all types of libraries and research organisations.

Elmari shared that she would like to use her prize to go on a library tour to visit libraries overseas to investigate new library trends in technology and service delivery. Congratulations to Elmari, she made the department proud!

President’s Award for best branch

The Western Province LIASA Branch won the award for the Best Branch 2010.

They received the President’s trophy and R5 000.00. The runners up were the Free State (second) and KwaZulu-Natal (third) branches. These branches set an example of how the business of LIASA should be conducted to promote the library profession.

Winner of 3M Essay Competition

Tsepiso Takadi, Principal Librarian at the Free State School of Nursing, Eastern Campus Phuthaditjhaba, received the second prize in a 3M Essay Competition at the LIASA Conference.

3M was celebrating their 40th anniversary in providing a wide range of security services, amongst others to help reducing library material theft by preventing the unauthorised removal of the materials. As part of their celebration, delegates had to write an essay about their “Tattle Tape” experience, explaining how this service has contributed to their library security.

3M Tattle tape provide the level of security in books and is a very reliable method of book protection.

Tsepiso received a 3M Hamper worth R400 which includes stationery. Congratulations Tsepiso!
