South Africa remains a good investment destination. This is the message that the mining industry stakeholders will be taking on an international roadshow slated for early March in Canada and United States.
The stakeholders (government, labour and business) met again today in Pretoria under the banner of Mining, Industry Growth and Development Task Team (MIGDETT) process, a body that was formed to create a strategy that will position the mining industry to take advantage of the next commodity boom.
The task team was mandated to identify bottlenecks and to come up with possible solutions to make the industry competitive and sustainable. One of the constraints was the negative perception of the South African mining industry in investor circles around the world and the roadshow is MIGDETT’s response to this challenge and will set the record straight. It will be led by the Department of Mineral Resources Minister.
The principals also discussed a wide range of other issues which included the state of the nation address and its implications for the mining sector especially the call by the President for all stakeholders to work together to achieve the goal of creating jobs.
“Through the MIGDETTT process, the industry is proud that its collaboration has led to many achievements to date and can reach its true potential in addressing the challenges that we currently face. One of these achievements has been the growth strategy for the sector which is unprecedented,” says Advocate Sandile Nogxina who is the convener of MIDGETT.
Other players represented include the Chamber of Mines, the South African Management Development Agency (SAMDA), the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), Solidarity and United Association of South Africa (UASA).
Another key issue that was discussed today is the Global Climate Change and its implications to a developing country like SA, particularly in the mining environment. The meeting agreed to work together in developing a position paper for the industry which would be further presented to the National Planning Commission at the beginning of March.
