The South African nation watched in delight as its swimmer netted the second gold medal in the 200 metres butterfly final at the London Olympics last night. Chad le Clos made SA history by beating Michael Phelps, who has dominated the same event in three Olympic competitions. Among the spectators were the Minister of Sport and Recreation, Fikile Mbalula and other South African dignitaries.
“We are proud of who we are. We said it, the African skies took over the British skies the day SAA landed with our athletes. The flood gates are open.” said Minister Mbalula, who extended his stay in London with a few hours to wish and witness Le Clos bag the second country gold medal.
Mbalula stated that Ernie Els’ win at the British Open and Hashim Amla setting a new SA record, served as a motivation for the SA athletes.
“We are truly the grandchildren of Nelson Mandela and we are worth of gold.” Mbalula continued.
He further wished the SA Olympians all the best for the rest of the competition and encouraged them to go for the medals as South Africa’s moment has come.
