South Africa to host International Driving Competition

South Africa will be hosting the Union Internationale Des Chauffeurs Routiers (UICR) a body that coordinates and represent the interest of professional drivers worldwide under the auspices of Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) in August 2012, at the North West province, in Rustenburg.

The Eastern Cape will be represented in the South African team by Mr J Schreiber from Cacadu District in the Articulated Category and Mr Qongqo from Amathole District in the bus category.

Their selection came following the second Best of the Best Driver of the Year (DoTY) competition to select professional drivers to represent the country during UICR World Championship. The DoTY competition hosted by the country at Boekenhoutkloof Traffic Training College on 16 and 17 February 2012.

Testing in the competition took place over the two days and all participants were required to undergo mandatory alcohol screening before every stage.

The categories were as follows:

  • Rigid Category
  • Bus Male
  • Bus Female
  • 3,5 ton delivery van
  • Articulated
  • Rigid and four wheel trailer

Vehicles of the competition were sponsored by Scania for Rigid and Articulated vehicles, City of Tshwane for the bus category and Engen for rigid and four wheel trailer.

The overall results saw the Eastern Cape Provincial Team take second position in the bus male category by Mr S Qongqo and placed third position in the articulated category by Mr J Schreiber.
