South Africa conveys condolences to South Korea following passing of former President Roh Moo-Hyun of the Republic of Korea (RoK)

The South African government has expressed its deepest condolences to the government and people of the Republic of Korea (South Korea) following the sad and tragic death of former President Roh Moo-Hyun, who was president of the Republic of Korea from 2003-2008.

South Africa's bilateral relations with the Republic of Korea expanded remarkably during the presidency of Mr Roh Moo-Hyun.

Former President Roh will be remembered for his policy of rapprochement ("sunshine policy") with North Korea of his predecessor President Kim Dae-Jung, by offering North Korea aid as a way to facilitate reconciliation and holding a summit in Pyongyang with North Korean leader Kim Jong Il in 2007, only the second such meeting between leaders of the two sides.
