Social crimes top priority for Premier Makhura

Addressing social crime in Gauteng communities remains a top priority for the Gauteng Provincial Government. "Government is currently working with various sectors of society to build a new social movement against social crime", said Premier David Makhura.

Premier Makhura believes all sectors of society have a role to play in fighting crime. "Communities must work with government to fight crime and Community Policing Forums as well as Safety Patrollers have a very key role to play in making and keeping their communities safe," said Makhura on Monday while addressing community members in Reiger Park, where two young children have been murdered in recent weeks.

The Department of Community Safety, working with the South African Police Service and sister departments, has embarked on substance abuse and crime prevention initiatives, which include regular school searches and substance abuse awareness campaigns.

The Premier also urged residents to report any crime to the police.

"You know who the people are who commit crime, who are selling stolen goods and selling drugs and it is time that you report this information to the police."

Since assuming office less than two months ago, Premier Makhura and his Executive Council have been making unannounced visits to government service delivery points to assess and improve service delivery.

Gauteng MECs were on Tuesday visiting government offices, police stations, schools and clinics in both Reiger Park and Eden Park to assess the quality of service delivery.

Makhura said Community Safety MEC Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane has been tasked with compiling a report following unannounced visits to police stations across Gauteng. This information will be used to strengthen social crime prevention initiatives.

Premier Makhura also announced that the Provincial Government would convene a summit on interventions to reduce crime by September 2014.
