The Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities (hereinafter referred to as ‘the Commission’) is a constitutional human rights institution established by the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa in 2004 to strengthen constitutional democracy with specific reference to the rights of culture, religion and language.
In terms of the CRL Rights Commission Act, the Commission is mandated to:
- Promote and develop peace, social cohesion, friendship, humanity, tolerance, nation building and unity among South Africans,
- To foster mutual respect among cultural, religious and linguistic communities,
- To promote the right of communities in order to develop historically diminishing and diminished heritage.
The CRL Rights Commission would like to pledge its support to the Department of Arts and Culture on its initiative to host a national summit on social cohesion. This summit has long been outstanding and the CRL Rights Commission hopes that the outcomes of the summit will be implemented at all levels of government, including non-governmental organisations.
In order to build the nation and ensuring that social cohesion values are practically implemented the CRL Rights Commission has adopted the following projects:
- Consultative hearings and revision of Public Holidays in South Africa
- Consultative hearings (survey) on the implementation and impact of cultural, religious and language issues in South Africa
- Revision of language policies in South African primary schools
- Research on minor religions in South Africa
- Consultative hearings and research on Khoisan and Nama religions in South Africa
- The impact of Ukuthwala on women and children
