The situation in the Steenberg and the Vrygrond settlement, says the Minister of Community Safety, Advocate Lennit Max, is of extreme concern for the police as well as the Department of Community Safety.
The Minister was involved from the start of the conflict between the Retreat Taxi Association and the Vrygrond Taxi Association and has ensured that sufficient law enforcement officers were deployed to the area.
Max is confident that the situation in the affected areas is currently under control and that peace will be restored in order for productive talks to find a settlement of agreement between the two taxi associations. Max reiterated that there remains no need for ANC MPL Mcebisi Skwatsha to tell him (Max) to look into the situation in Vrygrond.
He challenges Skwatsha to do proper research before making confounded statements for political gain. Max says that this comment from Skwatsha is a result of his ignorance and that he could rather have asked the question: What is Max doing about the situation?
Max says that his involvement is not subjected to the issuing of press statements to satisfy Skwatsha, but to ensure that those responsible attend to the issue.
Max also regrets the death of Mr Ashraaf Gamieldien that died due to the rival taxi attacks.
Max warned that no lawlessness will be tolerated and those responsible will account for their deeds.
