One hundred and seventy-three speedsters were among the 407 offenders issued with traffic fines and some arrested during zero tolerance road traffic law enforcement operations during the 60’s music festival held at Monare farm outside Mahikeng over the past weekend.
The highest speed recorded on roads leading to Mahikeng on 120 km/h speeding zone was 188 km/h and 124 km/h clocked on a 60 km/h zone on the Seweding-Airport road on the outskirts of Mahikeng.
One thousand three hundred and eighty-eight vehicles were stopped and checked of which 338 fines of the 407 issued were for human factor, of which the highest were for speeding followed by arrest of 85 unlicensed drivers.
Twenty-two drivers were issued with fines for not wearing their seat belts while 15 were for passenger overload and another 15 for ignoring road traffic signs. Other offences were for reckless and negligent driving, failing to produce documentation, overtaking on barrier lines, transporting passengers without a public driving permit etc.
Offenses for vehicle factors include 35 for driving unregistered and unlicensed vehicles, 23 for worn out tyres, 8 for failing to display registration plates and other defects.
One hijacked VW Polo sedan was recovered and a state vehicle allocated to the Department of Social Development, Women, Children and People with Disabilities was impounded for suspected abuse.
North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety & Liaison, Ms Desbo Mohono commends law enforcement officers from the Provincial Road Traffic Management Unit, South African Police Service, Mahikeng and Ditsobotla Local Municipalities for stamping their authority against lawlessness on priority roads leading to and around Mahikeng,
“The operation is a precursor of intensified zero tolerance operations motorists can expect across roads in the province throughout the festive season,” asserts MEC Mohono.
