Six die in N14 head-on collision and three seriously injured in secondary accident outside Ventersdorp six people died in a head-on collision involving an Opel Astra sedan and a Toyota Land Cruiser bakkie and three others seriously injured in a secondary accident on the N14 between Ventersdorp and Coligny in the North West on Friday evening.
The accident occurred about 10 kilometres outside Ventersdorp towards Coligny at around 7:45 pm. Three males including the driver and two male passengers and two female passengers who were in the Opel Astra which was from Ventersdorp to Coligny including a passenger who was at the back of the bakkie that was travelling in the opposite direction died on impact.
The driver of the bakkie sustained serious injuries and was rushed by paramedics to Potch Medi Clinic. Two policemen who had stopped at the scene of the first accident sustained serious injuries after their Golf sedan was hit from the back in a secondary accident by a Totota Hilux bakkie with a trailer.
One of the policemen was knocked over by the Toyota Hilux bakkie while his colleague was thrown underneath the Land Cruiser bakkie. Both of them including the driver of the bakkie who also sustained serious injuries were rushed to hospital.
The five people who were in the Opel Astra were trapped in the vehicle and had to use the Jaws of Life to retrieve their bodies from the wreakage. Police are investigating cases of culpable homicide and reckless and or negligent driving in the secondary accident.
North West MEC for Public Safety, Howard Yawa is distraught at the accident and wishes to convey his condolence to the families that lost their loved ones in the accident. MEC Yawa wishes the injured driver and policemen a speedy recovery.
