Six people died and two others were critically injured in a head-on collision involving a Chana sedan and an Isuzu bakkie on the R556 Sun City-Pretoria road in the North West on Saturday night.
The accident occurred between 11h30 pm and midnight near Barseba village, between Brits and Rustenburg. All five male occupants who were in the sedan and a female passenger who was in the Isuzu bakkie died at the scene of the accident.
The driver of the Isuzu bakkie and a passenger survived the accident with critical injuries. Both were transferred to Job Shimankana Tabane Hospital in Rustenburg after being stabilised at the Brits Provincial Hospital. Police have opened cases of culpable homicide and are investigating the cause of the accident.
North West MEC for Human Settlements, Safety and Liaison, Desbo Mohono is distraught at the tragic accident and wishes to convey his condolence to the families that lost their loved ones in the accident. MEC Mohono wishes the two injured passengers a speedy recovery.
