Six suspects who are allegedly part of a syndicate that steals cars from South Africa and sell them to neighbouring African countries have been arrested in Brits and parts of Pretoria.
A week ago, police received information about a stolen car that was to be transported to Zambia. The unit responsible for these crimes started an investigation on the information received. Last night two suspects started to move a stolen car to Zambia via Botswana. The two foreign nationals were arrested on the R104 between Brits and Hartbeespoort. They were driving a brand new Toyota Hilux (double cab) which was stolen from a dealership in Edenvale.
The suspects then led the police to two houses, one in Pretoria West and another in Atteridgeville. In these properties, our members found false car registration documents and false permission letters to take cars over the border. False Toyota and Audi VIN tags were also found. Police also impounded a suspected stolen Chevrolet, which belongs to one of the suspects.
Our investigation also revealed the presence of two more suspects who were in the country to buy stolen cars. They too were arrested. This brought the total of suspects arrested to six. They will appear in the Brits Magistrate Court, facing charges of theft and forgery. The SAPS management applauds members involved in the operation, which lasted till this afternoon.
