Public Service and Administration Minister Lindiwe Sisulu says training learners on information technology skills will ensure that the lack of skills in the field is addressed and boost the country’s economy.
Sisulu was speaking on the handover of two computer laboratories in Alexandria Primary School and Ukhanyo Secondary School worth almost R1 million as part of Mandela Day celebrations in Alexandria, Port Alfred.
“Our country’s economy is dependent on the success of the information technology industry which we rely on to connect to the rest of the world in conducting business,” said Sisulu.
She added that former President Nelson Mandela’s never give up attitude which resulted in a democratic South Africa should be embraced by all South African’s as the nation and the world continue to honour him.“As we celebrate the iconic Madiba we must, though we know we can never be like him strive to do good as he continues to inspire us even when he is in hospital right now,” added Sisulu.
The State Information Technology Agency (SITA) which donated the two computer laboratories will according to Sisulu also provide technical maintenance and support in addition to a technician on site at the schools to provide support to teachers and learners on an on-going basis.
This will be in addition to training that will be given to teachers on information communications technology for a three month period. She also handed over a vegetable garden to Bhongweni Primary Schools as part of an initiative to create food security in the community.
“Just like Madiba did in fighting poverty, this vegetable garden we are handing over today should serve as a first step in ensuring that poverty is history. This garden will ensure that the community is able to feed itself. We will also in an effort to encourage residents to have vegetable gardens start a competition where the best garden will be rewarded,” said Sisulu.
