Signing of wage agreement commendable

Basic Education Minister, Mrs Angie Motshekga has commended labour unions for their prudence and diligence during today's signing the 2009/10 agreement in improvement in salaries.

The agreement binds the Department of Basic Education and its employees, to a general salary adjustment, back-dated and implemented on a sliding scale of between 13% and 10% for the current financial year.

All unions in education and other major public sector unions in the Public Service Coordinating Bargaining Council (PSCBC) signed the agreement. Minister Motshekga welcomed the strong commitment made by the unions to work with the department to ensure a successful campaign towards Quality Learning and Teaching.

"By signing this agreement, the unions have shown their faith in the department's commitment to avoid labour disputes. We can now all focus on our core business, of ensuring quality basic education in our schools."

The Minister will have further regular meetings with unions to finalise all outstanding matters in terms of Resolution 1 of 2007.
