In an attempt to empower its frontline staff member with basic sign language skills, the Eastern Cape Department of Transport's Special Progammes Unit is currently conducting a five day sign language training session at Bulembu Airport VIP Hall outside King Williams Town.
About 20 frontline department employees from different districts are currently undergoing the training that started on Monday 21 May 2012 and are expected to complete on Friday 25 May 2012.
According to the project coordinator, Thabiso Khetsi, sign language training is one of the government’s attempts to promote user friendly environment for people with disabilities as their rights were infringed in the previous years.
"Such training will create a positive environment for deaf people and enable frontline staff members to attend deaf people without unnecessary delays" said Khetsi.
