Shooting at Pretoria Magistrate's Court concerns Police Committee

The Portfolio Committee on Police has today expressed concerns over the shooting of two court orderlies at the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

The two court orderlies were shot by suspects who were about to appear in court on Tuesday (19 August). The ongoing investigation into the incident notwithstanding, the Committee wants to know how and where the two suspects managed to get hold of a gun while kept in a holding cell.

Committee Chairperson Mr Francois Beukman said it was worrying to see that there were still guns floating about unaccounted in South Africa. He called on the SAPS to ensure that their probe into the matter did not end with apprehending the two suspects but to also include the owner of the gun that was used during the shooting.

“The owner of the firearm used in this incident needs to be investigated. If they happen to be the police officer, SAPS internal processes as well criminal processes would have to kick in,” said Mr Beukman.
