The newly appointed Mpumalanga Safety, Security and Liaison MEC, Mr Vusi Shongwe, has declared war on criminals saying the province will now be a safe place for both the citizens of the province and tourists.
MEC Shongwe was addressing his new management and staff members at the department on 4 November 2010.
He said citizens will be protected as he will personally get involved by assisting the police in hunting down the criminals.
“It is all over for the criminals, they do not have a place anymore in our province. I am sure you all have an idea of how to deal with criminals, but maybe you are not brave enough.
“I am courage to you and police. I will be at the forefront leading the police to raid taverns, stage roadblocks and surprise drug lords in their hiding places. This will assist the police because they cannot do it alone.
“We know all the crime hotspots in the province; we are going to camp there so that those hotspots could be flushed out of drugs and other criminal activities. Mbombela is a capital city for our province and it cannot be ruled by few criminals,” said MEC Shongwe.
He added that tourists needed to be protected from criminals because they contributed to the province’s economy.
The MEC acknowledged that there were passionate and hard-working police officers in the South African Police Service. He said they needed to be appreciated so that they would not despair.
He told the officials in the department that they should work very hard and assist government in the fight against corruption.
“I am a hard working MEC, and I expect all of you to do the same. I believe in God and I do not like to see other people suffer, but those who have mischievous ambitions in this government should stop because there will be consequences,” concluded MEC Shongwe.
