Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC, Vusi Shongwe has condemned the killing of an Ermelo police officer, Letabo Patrick Mashaba allegedly by a Msukaligwa Municipality Public Safety Director, Daniel Maluleke.
Mashaba was killed on Tuesday, 11 October 2011 after a road rage incident between him and Maluleke in Ermelo.
The MEC said it was unfortunate that a police officer died when his services were urgently needed for the festive season in ensuring peaceful holidays.
“We condemn the killing of police officers as they are the ones who are at the forefront of the war against crime.
“As a provincial department, we are concerned about police killings because they rob the citizens of sufficient security. Anybody who is killing a police official is killing our nation,” said MEC Shongwe.
He encouraged the police not be deterred by such incidences, but should instead work hard in his honour as he died while on duty.
Shongwe has also applauded the police for the swift arrest of a suspect, adding that the rule of law should take its course.
Maluleke is out on a R1 000 bail.
Shongwe has meanwhile sent his heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased and his colleagues at the station.
