Seventeen construction workers were injured when a truck overturned on the N4 Bakwena Platinum Highway between Brits and Bapong in the North West Province on Monday morning.
It is alleged that the Isuzu truck was transporting the workers back to Rustenburg from a worksite in Stoffberg (Mpumalanga) when it veered off the road at around 6h35 and tipped over on to the driver’s side on the side road. The accident which is suspected to have been caused by driver fatigue occurred about three kilometres from Bapong weighbridge towards Brits.
The lane from Brits to Rustenburg was closed by Provincial Public Safety traffic officers for about for one and a half hours for rescue operations. Three ambulances took the injured workers to Brits Provincial Hospital for further treatment.
Meanwhile, MEC for Public Safety, Howard Yawa wishes the injured workers a speedy recovery and appeals to drivers to stop and rest every 200 kilometres whenever they are travelling long distances to avoid fatalities on public roads caused by driver fatigue.
