Seven people die in Vaalbank accident near KwaMhlanga

A head on collision between two sedans travelling on R568 road between KwaMhlanga and Vaalbank has claimed seven lives today (25 June 2012). All seven occupants in both vehicles died on the scene.

It is still unclear what caused the accident but earlier indications are that one of the vehicles that was overtaking was travelling at a very high speed. The police are investigating a case of culpable homicide.

It is believed that of the four occupants in another vehicle, two were families consisting of husband and wife each while the other vehicle was a taxi patrolling car from Vaal Bank with three occupants.

The latest accident brings to 18 number of lives lost in road accidents since Friday in the province. Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Vusi Shongwe expressed shock at the latest accident saying that he is deeply saddened by the spate of accidents in the province.

“I deeply saddened by these accidents, our roads are gradually becoming dangerous to drive on. We are calling on other road users to drive carefully so that we can bring an end to these accidents and save lives,” the MEC said.
