SETE conference and expo major success for Sport and Recreation South Africa

Sport and Recreation South Africa (SRSA) recently co-hosted a well-attended two-day conference and expo to discuss issues in sport tourism and event hosting, and showcase South African sports to a broader audience.

The inaugural Sports & Events Tourism Events Exchange (SETE), held at the prestigious Cape Town International Convention Centre drew a national and international audience from the sports, eventing, hospitality and governmental sectors.

Keynote speakers at the conference included Dr Danny Jordaan, SRSA Chief director Prof Paul Singh as well as several foreign academics and sport tourism experts. Several SRSA personnel featured on the speaker list of the conference, while the organisation made twenty exhibition stands available for national sports federations to promote their sport codes to delegates and visitors.

Federations that had stands at the expo include swimming, mind sports, dancing, archery and gymnastics.

The first half of the conference focused on issues around the legacy of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. A number of panel discussions formed part of the proceedings and evoked much debate around the issue, especially the measuring of event economic and social impact.

Other topics covered at the conference includes golf tourism, event branding, and event sustainability.

Speaking to television journalists at the event, SRSA Chief Director Prof Paul Singh said the SETE added great value to the development of sport tourism in South Africa, and was a much-anticipated and welcomed platform for exchanging information and learning. 'This event shows SRSA's commitment to sport tourism and willingness to cooperate with tourism organisations to grow the sector,' he said.
