Gauteng Health and Social Development MEC, Qedani Mahlangu , has called on hospital board member to hold the CEO’s of hospital accountable for service delivery at the their different health institutions. MEC Mahlangu was addressing a hospital board’s indaba at Natalspruit hospital in Ekurhuleni today.

MEC Mahlangu said in terms of the law, hospital board members have a responsibility to ensure that hospitals function effectively and that managers discharge their duties accordingly.

The purpose of the indaba was to provide an opportunity for engagement with board members with a view to communicating the strategic direction of the department. It is also to ensure more community participation as informed by priorities of the department, as well as raise matters relating to oversight and governance of these institutions.

Mahlangu appealed to board members not shy away from asking difficult questions where they see that something is wrong.

“Board members are not there to glorify the CEO’s but to ensure that management of hospitals does its work properly. It is only through the strict oversight role board members that quality health’s care can be realised and service delivery can be improved,” she said.

The MEC also announced that all hospitals will have permanent board members by end of May. She urged board members to play a leading role in the success of Operation Buyisa. Operation Buyisa is meant to recover stolen properties from hospital.
