Sentencing of Lt Colonel (f) Zulu for murder and attempted murder at Vryheid High Court

Lt Col (f) Zodwa Zulu (33 years old) is to be sentenced by the Vryheid High Court for one count of murder and two counts of attempted murder, following her conviction on 13 February 2012 by the same court. The accused shot and killed Sinenkosi Cebile Zulu (who was 35 years old at the time) and attempted to kill the other two victims allegedly due to them interfering in her marriage.

It is alleged that on 13 September 2010, Lt Col Zulu, who was the Branch Commander of SAPS Mtunzini, knocked off duty and went to her in-laws in Nongoma where she shot and killed her sister-in-law. The accused also shot and injured her brother-in-law and shot at her mother-in-law. The accused started shooting at the victims through the window and went into the house through the broken window and continued shooting at the victims.

The matter was investigated by the Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD) after the accused handed herself to the police. The accused will be sentenced by the Vryheid High Court on 1 March 2012.
