The Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Ms Lindiwe Sisulu regrets to announce the passing on of the late Brigadier General (Brig Gen)Sidwell Baartman.
On 10 June 2011, Brig Gen Baartman and Colonel G Nhose were involved in a car accident four kilometres from Middelburg on the Hendrina road. Brig Gen Baartman died on the scene and Colonel Nhose was taken to the Middelburg Hospital (Midmed).
The South African Police Force is investigating the matter.
Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Ms Lindiwe Sisulu, the Secretary for Defence, Ms Mpumi Mpofu and the Chief of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), General Solly Shoke have extended their sincerest condolences to the family of the deceased.
