Security features of Umalusi certificates are enhanced

Umalusi, the Council for Quality Assurance in General and Further Education and Training, will issue the 2012 National Senior Certificate on new background paper. It recognises the need to incorporate further cutting-edge security features as well as updated design features that resonate with the national ethos.

The launch of the new certificates presents a unique opportunity to look to the future of national, regional and global recognition of South Africa’s National Senior Certificates.

The new background paper for the National Senior Certificate includes the following security features:

  • When held to the light, the certificate paper shows an unique Umalusi watermark.
  • When the border is viewed through a magnifying glass, it is made up of the word, ‘Umalusi’, printed repeatedly.
  • The National Coat of Arms is printed at the top centre of the certificate with Umalusi’s logo at the bottom of the certificate.
  • The national coat of arms appears in the background in grey.
  • The certificate has a barcode, which matches the certificate number.
  • Each certificate has a specific certificate sequence number printed as an exploding number (small to bigger font) and
  • The certificate contains a rectangular block filled with the candidate’s information in the background. Printed in light grey, the fill contains the personal information of the certificate holder as well as the relevant subject information.

The new certificates, which will be progressively introduced from April 2013, thus incorporate state-of-the-art security, technical and design features. Such regular enhancement of Umalusi’s certificates forms an important part of the fight against widespread fraud, counterfeiting and sale of fake certificates.

Certification usually takes place between April and June of each year as the final results become progressively available from the Departments of Education. According to Umalusi’s directives, the printed certificates are available for dispatch within seven working days of receipt of the correct data for printing.

The students of 2012 are reminded to fetch their certificates from their schools in June or July. Candidates who wrote supplementary exams can expect to receive their certificates in August. The certificate is the final proof of having completed schooling, and replaces the statement of results issued by the assessment bodies. Employers and higher education institutions use the statement of results as an interim measure, but will require the certificate to be presented in due course.
