Second learner critically injured in road accident outside Mahikeng - Mohono calls for zero tolerance traffic law enforcement

North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety amd Liaison, Ms Desbo Mohono on Thursday called for intensified speed and zero tolerance traffic law enforcement particularly in the morning on the Seweding Mahikeng Airport road in order to avoid further road fatalities involving learners.

MEC Mohono’s call follows the second road accident involving a learner in less than a week on the busy tarred road. Grade R learner Boitshepo Khachane died after he was knocked down by a car whilst crossing the very road last Thursday and was buried on Sunday in Kuruman.

Twelve year-old Pule Moalosi on Thursday morning sustained critical injuries and was admitted to the Intensive Care unit at Mahikeng Provincial Hospital after he was knocked down by a taxi.

The grade seven learners at Tetlano Middle School was crossing from Seweding to Motlhabeng village when he was knocked down and allegedly driven oven by a Toyota Quantam taxi. The accident occurred between Boitumelo Day Care Centre and Star Car wash at around 7h15am.

According to Kago, his 15 year old sister with whom Pule was walking to school together with their seven year-old younger brother, her younger brother’s view of the oncoming taxi was obstructed by another taxi that was loading passengers and he was knocked down as he attempted to cross in front of the stationary taxi. Police are investigating the cause of the accident.

In wishing the injured learner a speedy recovery, North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison, Ms Desbo Mohono appealed to motorists to drive with caution on the road and to be on the look- out for pedestrians particularly during rush hours.
