The Department of Basic Education urges all those learners who were unsuccessful in the national senior certificate examinations in 2009 and who qualify for supplementary examinations to make use of the opportunity to improve on their results by registering for supplementary examinations as soon as possible.
The Minister of Basic Education, Mrs Angie Motshekga, MP, made the following point on 7 January 2010 about learners who did not succeed in the National Senior Certificate Examinations in 2009:
“I also need to take the opportunity to encourage those learners who have not succeeded to try again. We do not always succeed the first time round. There is always a second chance. Make use of those chances through hard work and commitment”.
* Who is able to apply to register for supplementary examinations?
The following categories of learners may register of supplementary examinations:

1. If you have not met the minimum promotion and certification requirements in the final external examination, but you require a maximum of two subjects to obtain the national senior certificate, you may register for a maximum of two subjects for the supplementary examination in 2010. Please note that these subjects must be subjects that you sat for in last year’s end of year national senior certificate examinations.
2. If you were medically unfit and, as a result, were absent from one or more external examinations, you may register for the supplementary examination. You must provide d documentary proof substantiating the reason for your absenteeism at your registration centre to ensure entry to the supplementary examination.
3. If there was a death in your immediate family of a candidate, or there were other special reasons for your absence, you may register for the supplementary examination. You must provide d documentary proof substantiating the reason for your absenteeism at your registration centre to ensure entry to the supplementary examination.
4. If you can provide documentary evidence that you qualify for admission to a higher education institution or for an occupation, but do not satisfy the higher education faculty requirements or the requirements for the specific occupation, or you are one requirement short in meeting the minimum admission requirements for higher certificate, diploma and bachelor’s degree programmes, you may be allowed to register for a maximum of two subjects.
5. If you were unable to write or complete one or more of the national senior certificate examination question papers for reasons other than illness or injury you may apply to write the supplementary examination, provided that a written report is submitted by the principal of the school to the head of the assessment body.
6. In a case where an irregularity is being investigated, provisional enrolment for the supplementary examination may be granted to the candidate concerned, pending the outcome of the investigation.

* Where must I apply to register for supplementary examinations?
Learners must apply for registration at the school or centre where they sat for the 2009 end of year examinations in 2009.
* What is the closing date for registration for supplementary examinations?
Learners must apply no later than 22 January 2010.
* When will the supplementary examinations begin?
The supplementary examinations will begin on 15 February 2010.
Opportunity to apply to view or re-mark or recheck of your examination scripts
Learners may apply to view their examination scripts or apply for a recheck or a re-mark of their examination scripts at a prescribed fee.
* Where must I apply?
Registration for this must be done at the district or regional office which serves the school the candidate has attended. Application must be done once only.
* What is the closing date for applications?
The closing date for applications for viewing, re-marking and re-checking is 22 January 2010. Please note that NO late applications will be processed.
* Is there a cost for viewing, re-marks or re-check of scripts?
Yes. Fees for viewing, re-marking and re-checking of scripts per subject are as follows:
Viewing: R150
Re-mark: R70
Re-check: R12
Please note that viewing of scripts can only take place seven days after release of re-mark or re-check results. NO late applications will be processed
